I decided to make a loop from Stottard Gulch through Big Gulch on what is known as trail 27 on the Chappie OHV system. The snow on the trail made things difficult for about 2/3rds of the hike. The GPS also routed me on what started to be a road but became a brushy mess before breaking back out onto real trail. Had about a mile of brush busting. This hike was a huge calorie burner and I needed that. I will be looking at alternate routes for the next trip. I could see the trail was clear to Wild Cow Mountain if you went counter-clockwise on the loop that I planned. It is not possible to turn this into a loop though due to problems crossing the stream and the steep slopes in Big Gulch. I logged about 13.5 miles and 6 hours.— TripsAFoot (aka Scott)

We started from Sheep Camp in moderate temperatures. We followed the road until hitting snow and ice on the road about two miles up. We then returned to the Papoose Pass trail and did the loop back to Sheep Camp. We spent a pleasant time at lunch chit/chatting at a sunny spot on the trail below Papoose Pass. We checked out a different route to sand flat starting from Red fir flat....next time lets try Bunny flat to Red fir flat as a one way trip. This is a good area for cross country skiis too.— Barbara J ("Climbs with Lizards")

Conditions were good to cover ground on snowshoes. We went off trail (by design - mostly) here and there and got to see some great vistas. Lots of chit/chat and laughs.

Although I didn't skate, I had a blast walking the lake in my YakTrax and taking a million photos. It was such a rare treat to walk on the lake after kayaking it and hiking around it. I loved seeing all the ice crystals. It was a great group to laugh and share with, and even more so when the COOA group joined us after their hike up Cinder Cone. Thanks Johanna for hosting this spectacular event!

Lake Almanor never looked so good! Clear blue skies for miles, great views of Mt. Lassen, very little traffic and we found a different trail in the process. Thank you to all that went along and captured these great moments in their photos.— John Loveless ("Big John")
