Evening Herpetology Walk

Sulfur Creek Watershed (map)

Selected By: A former member

September is often a great time to observe wild Reptiles and Amphibians, the hottest part of summer is on its way out but the cold of winter has not yet come. Babies are often present.

We will meet at the Sulfur Creek Rd just off of North Market by Lost Ln (Lat: 40.602571, Lon: -122.382184)

We will hike along the Sulfur Creek Drainage, and in the creek itself for a little ways if it is still dry (creek is seasonal). Expect 2 to 4 miles of hiking.

I will give a short natural history tour of Reptiles and Amphibians of Redding Area. Will discuss species we encounter and species we do not. Fence Lizards and Treefrogs are a sure things, Garter snakes, Kingsnakes, Gopher Snakes, Sharp-tailed Snakes are non venomous snake possibilities. Alligator Lizards and Western Skinks are additional lizard possibilities.

Some animals may be briefly handled for demonstrative purposes but any that are will be promptly released.

Rattlesnakes are also possible, if encountered they will be respected by but not handled.

This was a very interesting event. The weather was very comfortable and Michael was very knowledgeable in finding and identifying the various frogs, snakes and lizards in the area. Michael would find a speciman then include many interesting facts about that speciman. Did you know that a Garter Snake has a belly button?. The entire hike was fascinating. Well Done Michael, Thanks.

Michael sure knows a lot about reptiles! I didn't think he would really be able to catch the little critters, but he did. I've talked to other friends who are interested in going on the next adventure. Michael said he wanted to lead a hike in February. Looking forward to it.

I enjoyed the experience of finding little herps at dusk and even in the dark. (We had flashlights). There were other night critters like owls and bats that showed up too. Michael is very knowledgable and I believe I learned quite a bit that I probably would never have found out on my own.

Excellent walk with an excellent leader. Totally worth the drive up from Chico.
