Lassen Volcanic National Park- South entrance (map)
Join us for a challenging snowshoe climb from the Sulfur Works, past Ridge Lakes, then up to the summit of Mt. Diller (9,087').
We'll follow the regular trail from the Sulfur Works up to Ridge Lake. From there, we'll leave the trail and start the climb up to the saddle between Mt. Diller, and Pilot Pinnacle. Then we'll summit Mt. Diller, and maybe nearby Pilot Pinnacle too.
It's only about 4 miles (R/T), but we'll be climbing about 2500' to earn the views from the summit. Depending on snow, weather, and party we may continue to follow the ridge northeast towards Lassen Peak.
Parts of the climb will be steep (with slope angles up to 30%), so this won't be an easy hike. It should take 4-6 hours altogether.
Aggressive snowshoes recommended (e.g., MSR's). If your snowshoes have heel elevators, you'll appreciate them on this hike. Snow shovels and avy probes also recommended.
Note: this is also an excellent opportunity for backcountry skiers and snowboarders. It may be possible for you to ride or glide nearly all the way back to the cars.
