Needs a location
A herping meetup?
Area for herp hike would be Sulfur Creek Drainage, trailhead to area of
interest is at North Market just before it goes up the hill to lake blvd
(Lost Ln I think it is called), but best place to park would probably be
the parking lot on Lake across the street from Shopko by old 99
trailhead, same parking area where Dollar Tree is but access to the
trail is way over by North Market (where there use to be a car rental
agency and I think a discount furniture store).
Age restricted event due to the nature of the exploration!
Age limited to age 14 or above. Michael has come across 5
rattlesnakes in area in last 30 days, while we probably won't see one, I
don't know that I want kids where there is tall grass and rattlesnakes
at dusk. The limit on group size is because I want to take the group to
a rattlesnake rookery I found there (den site where females go the birth
and care for their young) to increase odds of an encounter, they really
are majestic animals, but I don't want to disturb the den site too much
as it is in a safe place and I'd hate for them to decide to move.
No Dogs Please!
What to bring: Water, lightweight flashlight are a good idea to bring. Spare pair of
socks is good idea as well due to foxtails etc.
Shoes should have good tread.
We will certainly see Western Fence Lizards.
If the one remaining water pool isn't dry we will likely see Sierran
(aka Pacific) Treefrogs.
We may see Southern Alligator Lizards.
We may see Northern Pacific Rattlesnakes.
We may see other snakes/lizards.
Unless we get a good rain, the creek bed is currently completely dry and
that's the best place to walk to see stuff, so shoes with decent tread
are a good idea.
Attached photo with place to park cars and meet.
There's a Round Table and other food places up there but I don't feel a
specific need to eat afterwards, but if people want to do it before
dinner and eat out after, food is available up there. I generally don't
eat after field herping because sometimes I have snake musk scent all
over me and burs in my leg hairs, socks, and shoes.
I have not found any ticks after going here recently, I think tick
season is over but people should check themselves when done.
